UJ Launches Africa’s First Advanced Rescue Simulation Centre: Transforming Emergency Response Training

A historic milestone has been reached in African emergency response and aviation-related training with the launch of the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Rescue Simulation Centre, the continent’s first high-fidelity facility designed to prepare emergency responders for complex real-world scenarios.

Spanning 3,000m² across four storeys at UJ’s Doornfontein Campus, the centre integrates cutting-edge training environments to simulate high-risk operations. It includes a five-metre-deep survival pool, helicopter hoist training platforms and dedicated urban search and rescue zones, providing students and professionals with immersive experiences that replicate disaster and aviation emergency scenarios.

The launch, spearheaded by UJ’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa George Mpedi, positions the university at the forefront of emergency and disaster preparedness on the continent. “With this state-of-the-art facility, we are redefining how emergency response training is delivered in Africa. There is no longer a need to travel abroad for world-class rescue training. This Centre serves not only our students but the nation and the broader continent,” said Prof Mpedi.

The facility is operated under UJ’s Department of Emergency Medical Care, Faculty of Health Sciences and represents a strategic intersection between aviation safety, emergency medicine and disaster management. By incorporating helicopter hoist and survival pool exercises, the centre directly supports aviation rescue training, enabling realistic simulations of aircraft incidents, search and rescue operations and inter-agency coordination.

Designed with accessibility and impact in mind, the Rescue Simulation Centre offers cost-effective hands-on training to students, professional rescue teams and industrial partners. It also strengthens research and innovation in emergency response, enabling the analysis of operational readiness and identifying gaps in protocols, coordination and technical skills.

The launch marks a significant leap forward in emergency preparedness across Africa. By bridging academic expertise, aviation safety protocols and high-fidelity simulation technology, the UJ Rescue Simulation Centre is setting a new standard for rescue training in aviation, maritime and urban environments. It promises to improve response times, operational coordination and ultimately save lives across the continent.

As Africa faces increasingly complex emergencies, including aviation incidents, natural disasters and urban search and rescue demands, the UJ Rescue Simulation Centre exemplifies how innovation, education and operational training can converge to meet modern challenges head-on.
