The Children’s Flight 2026

At Krugersdorp Airfield on 8 May, aviation came alive in a truly special way as the Children’s Flight event gave young participants, many of whom had never flown before, the opportunity to experience the magic of aviation firsthand.

The day was dedicated to giving children a safe and structured introduction to flight operations, with ground briefings, cockpit familiarisation and actual flights conducted by experienced pilots. The focus was on education, exposure and creating unforgettable memories in a controlled and welcoming environment.

The event was opened in spectacular fashion with a skydiving display, featuring a large South African flag drop that set the tone for an action-packed day in the skies.

A notable moment early on the chilly morning was an address to the children by the new Chief of the South African Air Force, Lieutenant General Carl Moatshe, who took time to speak with and encourage those present at the start of the day.

A remarkable highlight of the day was that over 500 orphaned children were given the opportunity to fly for the first time, making it an incredibly emotional and meaningful experience for both the participants and organisers.

A wide and impressive variety of aircraft took to the skies throughout the day, offering the children a unique and varied flying experience. The classic warbirds and training aircraft included de Havilland Chipmunks and Boeing Stearmans, giving many their first taste of vintage aviation. Modern general aviation aircraft such as the Cirrus SR22, RV7s and RV4s also formed part of the flying programme, showcasing different styles of light aircraft performance and design.

A highlight of the flying display was the Puma Flying Lions Harvard formation team, who delivered a polished and disciplined flat display that showcased the iconic Harvard aircraft in formation.

Rotary-wing operations added another exciting dimension, with Bell Hueys, Bell 407s, Robinson R66s, R44s and Bell Jet Rangers all participating in flights. For many of the children, the helicopter experience was a highlight, offering a completely different perspective of flight and the surrounding landscape.

Throughout the day, pilots and volunteers took time to engage with the children, explaining how aircraft operate, what different controls do and what it means to be in the cockpit. The enthusiasm on the ground was matched only by the excitement in the air, as smiles and wide-eyed wonder followed every landing and take-off.

The children were also spoilt with snacks from various food outlets along with goodie bags presented to them, adding to the festive and heartwarming atmosphere of the day.

The atmosphere at Krugersdorp Airfield reflected the spirit of the aviation community at its best—supportive, passionate and focused on sharing the joy of flight. Organisers ensured strict safety standards were maintained while still allowing the children to fully immerse themselves in the experience.

The event was organised by Felix Gosher, whose efforts helped bring together pilots, aircraft and volunteers to make the day possible. Brian Emmens and his team provided live commentary throughout the day, guiding spectators and adding valuable insight into the aircraft and operations taking place.

The Children’s Flight not only delivered unforgettable moments in the sky but also left a lasting emotional impact on all who took part.
