Reliance Industries Limited and Rolls-Royce have announced their strategic intent to partner on the development of an indigenous combat aircraft engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme.
The announcement, made in London and Mumbai on 14 August 2026, represents a significant step towards India’s ambition of developing sovereign capability in advanced military propulsion technology.
Under the proposed partnership, Reliance and Rolls-Royce will explore the establishment of a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India. The facility is intended to serve as a centre of excellence for power and propulsion technology while supporting the design, development, manufacturing and delivery of the AMCA engine.
The partnership would combine Rolls-Royce’s expertise in advanced propulsion and engine technology with Reliance’s industrial capabilities, manufacturing capacity and experience in large-scale project execution.
Building sovereign propulsion capability
The proposed collaboration forms part of India’s wider Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which seeks to increase domestic capability and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers for strategically important technologies.
For the AMCA programme, the development of an indigenous engine is considered a key element of India’s long-term ambition to establish an independent fighter aircraft ecosystem.
Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries Limited, said the partnership would combine Rolls-Royce’s expertise in advanced propulsion with Reliance’s technology, manufacturing and execution capabilities to develop an indigenous aero-engine ecosystem in India.
Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgiç said the proposed partnership would bring together the company’s experience in advanced engineering and engine technology with Reliance’s industrial capabilities in India.
End-to-end aerospace capability
Beyond the immediate development of an engine for the AMCA, the proposed Aero Gas Turbine Complex could establish a broader industrial base covering the complete propulsion lifecycle.
The planned capability would encompass design, development, manufacturing, testing, production and through-life support, providing India with greater control over critical propulsion technologies.
The partnership could also create opportunities for wider cooperation in defence and civil aerospace as well as emerging power and propulsion technologies.
For Rolls-Royce, the proposed collaboration further expands its industrial engagement in India’s aerospace sector. For Reliance, it represents an opportunity to establish a significant position in one of the most technologically demanding areas of the defence industry.
Supporting the AMCA programme
The AMCA is being developed as India’s next-generation fighter aircraft and is intended to provide the Indian Air Force with an advanced combat capability incorporating modern sensors, weapons and low-observable technologies.
A domestically developed propulsion system would represent an important milestone for the programme, particularly in terms of India’s strategic autonomy and control over critical technologies.
The proposed Reliance-Rolls-Royce partnership therefore extends beyond the development of a single engine. If realised, the Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex could form the foundation of a long-term Indian capability in advanced military and aerospace propulsion.
The companies said the alliance would support India’s goal of becoming increasingly self-reliant in advanced technologies while helping position the country as a potential global player in the development and manufacture of advanced propulsion systems.
