Polokwane International Airport has successfully completed the upgrade and calibration of its Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range (VOR) navigation system, enhancing aviation safety and operational procedures as of 20 April 2026.
This upgrade forms part of the airport’s broader plan to implement an Instrument Landing System (ILS), with the two navigation aids working together to improve operational reliability and reduce disruptions caused by adverse weather and technical challenges.
The VOR plays a critical role in guiding aircraft during departure, arrival and instrument approaches, ensuring safe and efficient transitions from enroute flight to final approach. The calibration process was conducted by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) in accordance with international aviation standards, confirming that the system is operating accurately and reliably.
The upgrade to newer technology reflects ongoing efforts to modernise airport infrastructure, ensure compliance with global regulatory requirements and reinforce Polokwane International Airport’s commitment to safe and secure operations.
Aviation stakeholders including airlines, pilots and air traffic management personnel are advised that the VOR is fully operational and available for normal use with immediate effect.
