Bell Textron Inc., a Textron Inc. company, announced during VAI Verticon 2026 that the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA) has signed a purchase agreement for seven Bell 407GXi helicopters. The aircraft will support utility operations including high-voltage powerline maintenance, emergency management and operational support.

“Bell is proud to work with NTCSA as they expand their utility operations with Bell aircraft,” said Tim Evans, Managing Director, Middle East and Africa. “The Bell 407GXi is an ideal aircraft for utility operators across the region and a reliable platform for critical missions.”

NTCSA, responsible for South Africa’s national electricity transmission grid, is currently undertaking one of its largest build programmes in history, constructing over 14,000 km of high-voltage and ultra-high-voltage transmission lines to support new generation capacity. CEO Monde Bala said the new helicopters will play a pivotal role in strengthening operational capability and ensuring dependable aviation support across the transmission network. “As we modernise our fleet, the Bell 407GXi helicopters arrive at a perfect time to support both new construction and the maintenance of existing infrastructure,” Bala added.

The Bell 407GXi is equipped with single-pilot IFR capability, an adjustable cabin that seats up to five crew and an advanced Garmin G1000H NXi flight deck which improves situational awareness and reduces pilot workload. Its multi-mission versatility makes it ideal for utility operations, search and rescue and emergency medical missions while transporting essential equipment in demanding environments.

The announcement was made on 12 March 2026, highlighting NTCSA’s commitment to modernising its aviation assets and advancing South Africa’s energy transmission capabilities.
