The skies above Durban came alive on Sunday, 10 August 2025 as thousands of aviation enthusiasts flocked to Virginia Airport for the annual Durban Virginia Airshow. Renowned as one of South Africa’s premier aviation events, the show delivered a day filled with high-energy aerial performances, family entertainment and a vibrant celebration of flight.
Crowds and Atmosphere
Virginia Airport was buzzing with excitement as spectators gathered early to secure the best viewing spots. Families, aviation fans and photographers alike enjoyed a day of sunshine, good food and a festive spirit that reinforced why Durban’s airshow is one of the most popular in the country.
Aerial Highlights
This year’s flying programme was packed with variety and excitement. The event opened with a colourful skydive drop setting the tone for the day. The Puma Flying Lions Harvards thundered across the skies in tight formation showcasing precision flying in their iconic warbirds while the Goodyear Eagles Pitts Specials followed with their trademark energy and synchronised aerobatics. Solo displays by the Nashua Extra 300 and the Standard Bank-sponsored Extra 300 pushed the boundaries of aerial performance demonstrating breathtaking manoeuvres that left the crowd in awe.
Helicopters also featured prominently with the nimble Gazelle and the legendary Alouette III putting on impressive displays. The South African Air Force contributed with displays from 15 Squadron flying the Agusta A109 and the BK117 from 15 Squadron “Charlie” Flight both greeted with loud applause. Adding even more excitement, Nigel Hopkins and Jason Beamish flew the Master Power Technologies Extra 330s in a flawless demonstration of precision formation aerobatics.
The show also included the always-popular bike versus car race with Elton Bondi flying an Extra 300 against ground-based competition. Bondi thrilled the crowd once again with his daring “crazy flying” act in a Cessna C140 demonstrating controlled chaos that had spectators holding their breath. Adding a unique element to the programme, Andre van Zyl gave a graceful performance in his Magni Gyrocopter proving that even smaller aircraft can deliver big entertainment.
On the Ground
Beyond the action in the sky, the show grounds offered something for everyone. Static aircraft displays gave visitors the chance to get up close to both classic and modern aircraft. Food vendors, children’s activities and aviation merchandise stalls added to the experience ensuring it was a well-rounded day out for families.
Organisation and Safety
The event was well organised with smooth parking, good crowd control and clear commentary keeping the audience engaged. Safety remained a top priority throughout with organisers ensuring all performances and ground activities adhered to strict safety standards.
The 2025 Durban Virginia Airshow once again proved why it holds a special place on the South African aviation calendar. With thrilling flying, family-friendly attractions and a strong sense of community it was a fitting tribute to the joy of aviation.
As the smoke trails faded over Virginia Airport spectators left with smiles, memories and a renewed appreciation for South Africa’s vibrant aviation culture.
