SAAF 17 Squadron Executes Critical Medevac Mission in Magaliesberg

The South African Air Force (SAAF) demonstrated the tight-quarter performance envelope of its rotary fleet on Monday afternoon, 14 June 2026, when 17 Squadron executed a critical helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) casualty extraction. The tasking required navigating the complex, high-density altitude environment of the Dome Pools region within the North West Province.

The squadron scrambled an AgustaWestland A109 Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) from Mobile Deployment Wing Swartkop following an urgent coordination request from rescue entities Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA) Mountain Rescue Gauteng and SARZA Gauteng. Ground teams reported a civilian hiker exhibiting acute cardiac symptoms, stranded in a steep valley entirely inaccessible to conventional wheeled emergency vehicles.

Commanded by pilot Lieutenant Colonel Ria Maleba and flight engineer Sergeant K.J. Raphiri, the A109 crew faced challenging localized mountain drafts and tight lateral clearance constraints inside the gorge. The flight crew stabilized the twin-engine aircraft into a precision hover, allowing onboard wilderness medical technicians to rapidly secure and load the patient.

The crew conducted a direct medical evacuation to a healthcare facility in Brits. The patient was transferred into intensive medical care within the critical treatment window, highlighting the vital role of 17 Squadron’s aircrews and light utility helicopters in supporting life-saving civil-military operations in challenging terrain.
