Somon Air Makes Landmark Commitment to Boeing for Up to 14 Aircraft

In a bold move to expand its international footprint and modernize its fleet, Somon Air, Tajikistan’s national carrier, has announced a commitment to acquire up to 14 Boeing aircraft, including four 787-9 Dreamliners and ten 737-8 MAX jets. The announcement was made during the C5+1 Summit, coinciding with the U.S.’s 10th anniversary of the diplomatic platform.

Somon Air currently operates six Next-Generation 737s, connecting Dushanbe to 25 destinations across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The new order marks the airline’s first-ever widebody purchase, with the 787-9 Dreamliner enabling long-haul intercontinental routes and providing enhanced passenger comfort. Meanwhile, the 737-8 MAX jets will modernize the airline’s single-aisle fleet and form the backbone of its short and medium-haul network.

“We are pleased to announce our commitment to expand our fleet with Boeing’s state-of-the-art 787 Dreamliner and 737 MAX airplanes,” said Abdulkosim Valiev, CEO of Somon Air.
“This significant investment not only marks our first widebody order but also reinforces our dedication to providing exceptional service and comfort to our passengers. With flexibility built into this commitment, Somon Air can adjust its fleet further based on market demand.”

The acquisition of these modern Boeing aircraft brings a 20–25% improvement in fuel efficiency over the existing fleet, translating into lower operating costs and improved environmental performance. The Dreamliner family, which has opened more than 520 new nonstop routes and carried over 1 billion passengers worldwide since its 2011 introduction, is expected to significantly boost Somon Air’s long-haul network capabilities.

“Somon Air’s continued choice of Boeing as its strategic partner underscores their preference for Boeing jets to grow their route network,” said Paul Righi, Boeing Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Eurasia and India.
“The versatility of the 787-9 and 737-8, combined with their outstanding performance, range and operating economics, provide Somon Air with the essential tools needed to scale its operations effectively.”

The deal is not only a major milestone for the airline but also supports over 11,000 jobs in the U.S. once finalized and posted to Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website.

Founded in 2008, Somon Air has built a reputation for safety, modernity and service excellence, operating regular passenger and charter flights from Dushanbe International Airport. With this landmark order, the airline is poised to strengthen its position as a key player in Central Asian aviation while expanding its reach to new international destinations.
