Madagascar Airlines Launches Transversal Air Service on the East-North Axis

Madagascar Airlines, in partnership with the Ministry of Transport and Meteorology, has officially launched a transversal air service program linking key destinations along the East-North axis, including Toamasina, Sainte-Marie, Antalaha, Maroantsetra, Sambava, Antsiranana and Nosy-Be. The program uses a LET-410 aircraft operated by the Malagasy State to provide faster, more reliable connections between regions.

The initiative aims to enhance territorial continuity, support local economies and improve accessibility in areas where road travel remains long and restrictive. With the new flights, journeys that previously took several hours or even a full day by land can now be completed in as little as 35 minutes to one hour and 15 minutes, depending on the route. For instance, travel between Sambava and Maroantsetra takes 35 minutes, Antsiranana to Nosy-Be 40 minutes, Antalaha to Antsiranana one hour and 10 minutes and Toamasina to Antalaha one hour and 15 minutes.

The LET-410 aircraft, with 19 seats and the ability to operate on short runways and secondary airfields, is ideal for serving lower-density routes while maintaining both economic and social impact. Madagascar Airlines emphasizes that safety remains an absolute priority, operating all flights in full compliance with international regulations, including IATA and ICAO standards.

The program is aimed at strategic sectors such as vanilla, fisheries, agriculture, tourism and regional trade, offering regular flights, charters and B2B partnerships for companies, NGOs, institutions and tourism operators. A segmented pricing policy has been put in place to ensure both accessibility for local populations and the economic viability of the system.

“These transversal lines mark a major step forward for territorial continuity and regional development. Madagascar Airlines welcomes the support of the State to strengthen connectivity and support local economic growth,” said Karl Andrianony, Chief Commercial Officer of Madagascar Airlines.

“This program is the result of close collaboration between the State, Madagascar Airlines and local authorities. It responds to a strong territorial demand for sustainable connectivity, facilitating travel and boosting economic exchanges between regions,” added Juste Créscent Raharisone, Minister of Transport and Meteorology.

The inaugural flight on 22 January 2026 marks the operational start of these new transverse routes, which will soon be fully available through Madagascar Airlines’ distribution network.
