The National Police Day and Career Expo in Bloemfontein on the 27 January 2026 was marked by a historic milestone for the South African Police Service (SAPS) Air Wing when an all-female flight and ground crew conducted a ceremonial flypast. This first-ever all-female flypast in the 41-year history of the SAPS Air Wing symbolised unity, discipline and the organisation’s unwavering commitment to serving and protecting the nation.
The flypast was conducted in honour of SAPS members currently on duty and in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the line of duty. Thousands of spectators witnessed the formation, which quickly became the highlight of the day’s commemorations.
The flying assets consisted of a Robinson R44, an Airbus Helicopters H125 Squirrels and a Pilatus PC6 Porter. The formation was led by Captain Zelda Ntuli from Wonderboom Air Wing flying the Pilatus PC6 Porter. Captain Tillanie Neethling from Pretoria Air Wing piloted the H125 Squirrel designated as Helicopter 1, while Helicopter 2 was flown by Lieutenant Colonel Mercia Maans from Johannesburg Air Wing. Helicopter 3, a Robinson R44, was piloted by Lieutenant Colonel Kgothatso Khunou from Bloemfontein Air Wing. The ALEO position was fulfilled by Warrant Officer Hetta Whiteley, also from Bloemfontein Air Wing.
The precision and coordination displayed during the flypast reflected the high level of training and professionalism within the SAPS Air Wing. The formation reinforced the Air Wing’s values of discipline, teamwork and operational excellence.

Beyond the aerial display, the all-female crew engaged with high school learners at the Air Wing career exhibition stall. Warrant Officer Thobeka Shozi and Warrant Officer Gloria Banda from Wonderboom Air Wing provided information on career opportunities within the Air Wing, inspiring young people to consider careers in aviation and law enforcement.
The historic flypast served as a powerful symbol of progress, demonstrating that women continue to play an increasingly vital role in operational aviation within the SAPS.
