The next generation of South African aviation professionals is taking off — thanks to the 2025 ATNS Winter School, which kicked off this week with 40 Grade 12 learners embarking on a week-long journey into the world of air traffic management and aviation.

Coinciding with Mandela Month, this inspiring initiative by Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) — in partnership with the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Transport — helps learners strengthen vital skills in Mathematics, Science, and English, opening doors to future STEM and aviation careers.
Fifteen schools supported through ATNS’s Corporate Social Investment programme each sent two learners and an educator, while 10 more learners were handpicked by the Department of Transport, ensuring that young people from rural and underserved communities get a chance to dream big and fly higher.
As ATNS marks its 33rd year of safeguarding African skies, its Aviation Training Academy continues to shine as a hub for world-class training. The Winter School wraps up on 11 July with a special Closing Ceremony and Career Awareness Event, introducing learners to real opportunities within South Africa’s vibrant aviation industry.
Tomorrow’s airspace needs tomorrow’s leaders — and they’re already on the runway.
