Ethiopian Airlines Group, Africa’s leading carrier, has confirmed the purchase of nine Boeing 787-9 aircraft, with deliveries scheduled between 2031 and 2033. The new aircraft will expand the airline’s route network and enhance international connectivity, offering passengers greater flexibility.
This latest order follows the airline’s commitment to 11 Boeing 737 MAX jets announced at the Dubai Airshow. Finalized in December 2025, the combined 787 and 737 MAX purchase boosts Ethiopian Airlines’ order book by 20 fuel-efficient Boeing airplanes.
Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Mr. Mesfin Tasew, said: “We are pleased to confirm the order for nine Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to expand our fleet. This underscores our commitment to modern fuel-efficient aircraft and strengthens our customer service. We will continue adopting the latest technologies as part of our strategic vision to advance sustainable aviation.”
Ethiopian Airlines operates Africa’s largest 787 Dreamliner fleet, flying its 787-8 and 787-9 jets on intercontinental routes to Europe, Asia and North America as well as key intra-African routes.
Mr. Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, added: “The 787 Dreamliner family has proven to be a game-changer for airlines worldwide, and we are proud to support Ethiopian Airlines in connecting Africa to the global community.”
The new order brings Ethiopian Airlines’ total number of Boeing 787-9s on order to 20 aircraft. Along with previously ordered 737 MAX jets, the airline holds significant firm orders, options and purchase rights for Boeing 737 MAX and 777X aircraft.
Beyond fleet expansion, Ethiopian Airlines Group is driving major modernization initiatives, including the groundbreaking of Bishoftu International Mega Airport City, a transformative project set to reshape African aviation and strengthen the airline’s global position.
