Draco Aircraft announced its decision to power the latest iteration of the Draco aircraft with Pratt & Whitney Canada’s PT6A-135A engines. The revolutionary four-seater aircraft capable of taking off and landing within less than 30 meters and without a fixed runway will become even more powerful than the prototype built and flown by Mike Patey in Utah/USA.
The PT6A engine family stands out for its versatility and proven performance, making it the preferred choice for Draco. Notably, it is the only engine to have achieved Single Engine Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) status for passenger revenue operations in North America, Australia, Europe, and New Zealand.

Draco customers will also benefit from a robust support network provided by Pratt & Whitney Canada. This includes globally designated service facilities, field support managers across six continents, and a 24/7 Customer First Centre dedicated to delivering rapid expert assistance. The engine also boasts advanced diagnostic capabilities and enhanced operational efficiency, notably through tools such as the Know My PT6 application available for iOs and Android users. Furthermore, Pratt & Whitney Canada maintains the largest pool of rental and exchange engines in the industry, ensuring that operators have access to necessary resources whenever required.
In summary, the PT6A engine is a cornerstone of modern aviation, recognized for its adaptability and efficiency in various operational contexts. Its legacy continues to evolve as it meets the demands of contemporary aviation challenges.
Johannes von Thadden, CEO of Draco Aircraft, confirmed the decision: “With Pratt & Whitney Canada we didn’t only find the world’s best supplier for such an engine, but also a partner who will support Draco Aircraft all the way from design to certification. P&WC already knows Draco well from working with Mike Patey to equip his Draco prototype. The new PT6A-135A engine will make Draco a very reliable and unique aircraft for anyone who wants to experience flight at its best.”
“Pratt & Whitney Canada is confident in the PT6A’s performance and reliability – making it the premier choice for the Draco aircraft. We will continue to leverage our expertise in collaboration with Draco Aircraft to meet the expectations of our customers,” said Christopher Scott McElvaine, Vice President Business Development and Commercial Services at Pratt & Whitney Canada
With the PT6A-135A as its powerplant, the new Draco aircraft will also offer its customers:
- More power with 750 shp
- Increased maximum takeoff weight (MTOW)
- Better take-off field length and landing performance
- Best in class maximum climb rate of more than 4,000 feet per minute
- Reduction of maintenance costs
Draco Aircraft announced in December that it had selected MT Propeller near Munich as its supplier with its 5-blade Quiet Fan jet propeller. Together with the PT6A-135A engine from Pratt & Whitney Canada, it will make Draco quieter and more powerful at the same time, which will further improve the flight experience compared to the prototype.
Draco Aircraft is currently in talks with potential investors to make Draco ready for series production with certification from both the European and US aviation safety authorities EASA and FAA. The selection of Pratt & Whitney Canada as the engine supplier is another important step in this regard.
