Two young rhino aged 12 and 18 months were successfully rescued on Saturday 28 February 2026 in the Kruger National Park following a report from vigilant visitors.
The calves were spotted resting along the road in the Malelane section. Thanks to the visitors’ swift action in alerting authorities park officials responded immediately leading to the capture and safe translocation of both animals to a secure location.
The younger calf was airlifted by an Airbus H125 helicopter using a sling while the older calf was carefully transported by crate to a secure facility ensuring both were moved with minimal stress and maximum care.
Park management extended heartfelt gratitude to the visitors whose awareness and prompt reporting made the rescue possible. Their commitment to conservation has given these vulnerable calves a renewed chance at survival.
Rangers are currently combing the surrounding area in an effort to locate the mother. The circumstances surrounding her absence remain unclear and investigations are ongoing.
