A walk down memory lane to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the iconic DHC-1 Chipmunk and other de Havilland aircraft at Jack Taylor Airfield in Krugersdorp (FAKR) is an event that no aviation enthusiast could possibly miss. Pilots, history buffs and aviation fans gathered recently at the airfield for a spectacular tribute to the “Chippie” and its legendary stablemates.
The atmosphere at Krugersdorp was electric, punctuated by the unmistakable hum of classic piston engines. Visitors were treated to a brilliant aerial display by a trio of Orion Cubs, which took to the skies to salute the de Havilland gathering and put on a flawless show against the Highveld backdrop. Down on the flight line, attendees got up close and personal with aviation royalty. Among the stellar lineup was the legendary ZS-LJU—a de Havilland Chipmunk officially recognized as the third-oldest flying Chipmunk in the world. Seeing this pristine machine gleaming in the sun was worth the trip alone.
No de Havilland celebration would be complete without the insights of those who know these handling characteristics best. Aviation legend Scully Levin was on hand to share his extensive, lifetime experience piloting de Havilland aircraft. Having flown almost every notable creation to come out of the de Havilland design bureau over his illustrious career, Scully held nothing back when reflecting on the guest of honour. To the delight of the crowd, he stated unequivocally that the Chipmunk remains one of the finest aircraft he has ever had the privilege to fly. High praise indeed from one of South Africa’s most decorated display pilots.
As the sun set over Jack Taylor Airfield, casting a warm glow over the fabric and aluminum of the gathered classics, EAA Chapter 973 proved once again why they are masters of hosting. The DHC-1 Chipmunk may be turning 80, but thanks to the passionate caretakers, mechanics and pilots of South Africa, this legendary trainer is still teaching us how to love the sky.
Clear prop, and here’s to the next 80 years!
