Thirty of South Africa’s top skydivers are preparing for a record-breaking attempt at Skydive the Ranch in Delmas this weekend with jumps scheduled from 08:00 to 17:00 on both Saturday and Sunday.
The daring challenge will see the jumpers exit three aircraft simultaneously and link up in mid-air to create a complex formation within just 55 seconds. If successful, the team will set a new South African skydiving record surpassing the current benchmark of 24 skydivers achieved on 26 November 2017.
The event is organised by Brad Curnow, Warren Dent and Mohan Chudalay and will feature Roodepoort’s Stevan Boskovic who will not only be one of the skydivers but also capture the action as a videographer.
Speaking ahead of the attempt organiser Brad Curnow said the record bid represents more than just a technical achievement.
“I feel grateful because it has been such a wonderful collaboration and team effort. I have to thank the whole team at Skydive the Ranch for making the massive effort to deliver a project like this as well as my fellow coaches Mohan, Warren and Amy Ashford. And of course all of the skydivers who participated in the training camps leading up to this attempt.”
Curnow added that he hopes the spectacle will inject new life into the sport.
“Since Covid-19 the sport has seen declining numbers in terms of membership and activity. I hope what we have done here will help change that trajectory. Skydiving in South Africa has an amazing history and some wonderful achievements and we would love to get the sport back to those levels.”
The event is open to the public with spectators able to enjoy on-site facilities including a restaurant, parking, tandem skydives and camping. Organisers promise an unforgettable experience showcasing the precision, skill and teamwork of South Africa’s best skydivers as they aim to etch their names into the record books.
