O.R. Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) is making significant strides in its R14.5 billion, five-year Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) programme, aimed at modernising infrastructure, improving operational reliability and delivering a world-class passenger experience.
The current phase of the programme focuses on high-impact areas for travellers, including refurbished escalators and travelators, new ergonomic seating, enhanced wayfinding signage and durable tiling replacing carpets at all international boarding gates, creating a cleaner and more contemporary environment.
“At O.R. Tambo International Airport, we listen to our passengers. This programme directly addresses their expectations for facility standards, delivering infrastructure that meets global benchmarks,” said Mr. Jabu Khambule, Regional General Manager of ORTIA.
Responding directly to passenger feedback, the airport has accelerated a full refurbishment of terminal ablution facilities. After a brief pause for the G20 Leaders’ Summit and the festive travel peak, work resumed at full capacity. The Ground Floor (Domestic Arrivals) and Domestic Departures (near Central Security) now feature state-of-the-art facilities with premium finishes, prioritising hygiene, comfort and accessibility.
Project Timeline:
- Phase 1: Commenced 1 June 2025, completion by end of March 2026 — 90 individual toilets modernised.
- Phase 2: Commences July 2026 — 780 individual toilets scheduled for refurbishment, planned with minimal disruption to passengers.
These upgrades are part of a broader effort to ensure long-term efficiency, safety and pride in Africa’s busiest airport. ORTIA extends its gratitude to travellers for their patience during construction.
“We are working towards an airport that moves people efficiently while delivering comfort and excellence,” added Mr. Khambule.
