The much-anticipated second edition of the Potchefstroom Airshow arrived with great enthusiasm, marking a strong start to the year in partnership with the Smoke on… Go! Foundation, Tic Tac Bets, Essential Fuels and Ofm.
Following the overwhelming success and positive feedback from last year’s inaugural event, expectations were sky-high – and this year’s show certainly did not disappoint. From seasoned aviation enthusiasts to families enjoying their first airshow, the energy on the ground matched the thrilling displays in the sky. With new acts, improved logistics and an even stronger community turnout, the 2025 edition raised the bar and solidified Potchefstroom’s reputation as a standout stop on the South African airshow calendar.
Air Force heritage
Potchefstroom Airport carries with it a rich aviation heritage, once echoing with the distinctive hum of Lycoming engines from light military aircraft such as the Cessna C185 and the Bosbok. In its heyday, the airport was a hive of South African Air Force activity, serving as a vital hub for training and operations involving these iconic aircraft.
Today, the airport has transformed into a renowned centre for gliding excellence. With ideal weather conditions and vast open skies, Potchefstroom has become a magnet for both local and international glider pilots. It now hosts an impressive collection of gliders and regularly welcomes enthusiasts and competitors from around the world, not to mention being the headquarters of the internationally renowned Jonker Sailplanes glider range.
After most teams arrived from various airfields across Gauteng, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, setting a positive tone for the day. Upon landing, all participating crews and officials assembled at the Glider Clubhouse for the safety and emergency procedures briefing – an essential step in ensuring both the safety and overall success of the event.
