Wing Commander Sasha Nash has taken the helm of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team (RAFAT) as the new Officer Commanding, saying she is “incredibly proud and excited” to lead the world-renowned team.

Wg Cdr Nash assumes command of the 150-strong unit, including pilots, engineers and ground crew, succeeding Wg Cdr Adam Collins, who completed a highly successful three-year tour. As OC, she oversees all aspects of the Red Arrows’ operations, from safety and display planning to engineering and public engagement.

Joining the RAF in 2005, Wg Cdr Nash is an experienced fast-jet pilot who flew the Tornado GR4 on frontline operations and international exercises. Prior to her appointment, she served as Chief of Staff in the Display Wing Headquarters, working closely with the Red Arrows and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Reflecting on her appointment, she said: “This is a career opportunity of a lifetime. The Red Arrows are a team of dedicated, diligent and enthusiastic people exemplifying the ethos and values found across the RAF. I’m excited to work with them to continue delivering the levels of excellence the team is globally renowned for.”

Originally from Surrey, Wg Cdr Nash’s passion for aviation began at six years old after attending airshows. She later secured a sixth form scholarship and university bursary to join the RAF, pursuing a career in fast-jets that has spanned two decades.

“I’m incredibly proud to now be commanding a team whose aim is to represent the UK and inspire future generations of aviators from all backgrounds,” she said. “This is a great time to be joining the Red Arrows as we prepare for a busy season and plan for the future. I can’t wait to work alongside the team and meet people at airshows and events this year.”

Training for the upcoming season is already underway, led by Red 1, the pilot responsible for designing the aerobatic display. Public performances are expected to begin in late May or early June.

Paying tribute to her predecessor, Wg Cdr Nash said: “I’ve worked alongside Adam over the past few years and witnessed his dedication to the team and the RAF as well as his immense wealth of display knowledge. He has earned deep respect across the team and the wider display community, both in the UK and internationally.”

Wg Cdr Adam Collins spent seven years with the team over two periods, initially as Red 10 – the safety supervisor and ground commentator – and then returning in 2023 to command the team. His second tour included the Red Arrows’ landmark 60th diamond anniversary season and a high-profile tour to Canada.

Reflecting on his time, he said: “Despite flying around the world and taking part in incredible events, the highlight of my time on the team has been working with the most professional and dedicated people in my career. Whether training or performing displays, everyone goes the extra mile to inspire the public through precision flying and engagement on the ground.”

He added: “As I hand over command to Sasha, I wish her the very best. I am confident that under her leadership, the Red Arrows will continue to demonstrate precision, excellence and teamwork across the globe.”
