Embraer and U.S. defence technology firm Anduril Industries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to integrate the pallet-launched Barracuda-500M (B-500M) stand-off cruise missile into the C-390 Millennium tactical transport platform. Announced at the Farnborough Airshow, the collaboration seeks to expand the multi-mission airlift aircraft into a force multiplier capable of generating large-scale kinetic and non-kinetic stand-off effects while preserving its core air mobility roles.
The initiative leverages roll-on/roll-off mission systems and standard aerial-delivery procedures, enabling the twin-engine C-390 to deploy dozens of affordable, mass-producible autonomous cruise missiles simultaneously. By deploying palletized munitions through the rear cargo ramp without requiring permanent airframe modifications, operators can execute distributed strike operations in contested environments and support Agile Combat Employment (ACE) concepts for U.S. and allied forces.
Bosco Da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defence & Security, stated that exploring stand-off launch capabilities for the platform marks a significant step in expanding its mission flexibility and operational possibilities for global customers. Greg Kausner, Senior Vice President for Global Defence at Anduril, added that integrating the Barracuda-500M gives allied militaries a rapid, cost-effective method to deliver massed stand-off capabilities from an established airlift asset, addressing urgent global demand for scalable munitions.
Anduril first completed flight testing of the pallet-launched B-500M in September 2024 and has since conducted extensive validation testing, including Networked Collaborative Autonomy flights and terminal engagement trials. The integration adds further utility to the C-390 Millennium, which carries up to 26 tons of payload at speeds of 470 knots. The platform continues to expand its global customer base, having been selected by air forces across South America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East for tactical transport, air-to-air refuelling and specialized mission profiles.
