Cape Winelands Airport Secures WBHO as Contracting Partner for Landmark Expansion

Cape Winelands Airport has taken another major step toward realising South Africa’s next-generation aviation hub with the appointment of WBHO as its contracting partner for the technical development and construction phase of its multibillion-rand expansion.

The agreement marks a pivotal moment for the R8-billion project which will introduce a new boutique terminal, extended and realigned runway infrastructure, upgraded airside systems, expanded cargo capabilities and a revitalised general aviation precinct. Once operational, the airport is expected to support around 35,000 direct and indirect jobs increasing to more than 100,000 over its first twenty years.

Russell Adams, Director at WBHO, says the company is proud to be entrusted with a project of this scale.
“WBHO is honoured to have achieved this significant milestone with the Cape Winelands team. This partnership will enable the acceleration of the technical design processes and subsequent construction completion of the airport project. A greenfield project of this scale and complexity is one WBHO is excited to be part of. Successful completion will showcase the talent and competence of South Africa’s local development, investment, design and construction capacity in delivering significant economic infrastructure.”

Recognised as one of South Africa’s largest and most experienced construction firms, WBHO brings deep expertise in civil engineering and major infrastructure delivery which positions the project firmly on the path toward construction readiness.

Deon Cloete, Managing Director of Cape Winelands Airport, emphasises that the appointment ushers in a critical new phase.
“With the contractor now formally on board, the project advances into detailed technical development and planning. WBHO’s proven track record in delivering complex infrastructure projects positions the airport to achieve excellence in execution. The combined expertise strengthens our commitment to building an efficient future-ready and environmentally responsible aviation facility.”

The Western Cape stands to benefit significantly from the enhanced regional connectivity the airport will provide. Its location in the scenic Cape Winelands offers a rare opportunity to design an airport experience that reflects the character and beauty of the region while serving as a high-performance logistics and aviation hub. The development is set to bolster competitiveness, attract investment and support the region’s thriving tourism economy.

The announcement follows the confirmation of Growthpoint Properties as a strategic development partner responsible for long-term property and asset management across the 450-hectare aviation precinct’s commercial logistics and hospitality elements that will complement the airport’s aviation infrastructure.

As the project enters its detailed technical development phase, WBHO will work closely with the Cape Winelands Airport team to refine design frameworks, determine construction requirements and prepare the site for full-scale development. Additional announcements including key programme milestones are expected in the coming weeks as the airport progresses toward breaking ground on one of the country’s most ambitious aviation projects.
