Cessna Citation Ascend earns FAA certification and ushers in a new era for the 560XL family

Textron Aviation has marked a major milestone with the Cessna Citation Ascend receiving its Federal Aviation Administration type certification on November 5. The aircraft is now on track to enter service later this year and brings a host of upgrades to one of the world’s most successful midsize business jet families. Building on the strong legacy of the 560XL series, the Ascend introduces new technology, improved performance and a refined flat-floor cabin that strengthens its appeal to both corporate and private operators. Two flight test aircraft accumulated more than 1,000 hours and completed an extensive certification programme to secure approval.

According to Chris Hearne, senior vice president of Engineering & Programs, the certification reflects Textron Aviation’s long experience in developing and validating new aircraft. He explained that customer feedback played an important role in shaping the Ascend, which has been designed to deliver improvements in performance, productivity and overall efficiency. With more than 1,000 Citation 560XL series aircraft delivered since 2000, the type’s reputation for comfort, reliability and mission versatility remains a strong factor in its continued popularity.

A key highlight of the Ascend is its completely modernised cockpit built around the Garmin G5000 avionics suite. The system introduces autothrottle technology to reduce pilot workload and enhance flight-envelope protection. Three large fourteen-inch high-resolution displays support split-screen use and are complemented by standard dual flight management systems. Synthetic vision technology provides clear rendering of terrain and obstacles while a cockpit voice and data satellite transceiver enables direct satellite communication from the flight deck. The aircraft also features advanced Garmin weather detection and avoidance capabilities and can be fitted with a second Iridium data radio along with controller-pilot data link communications for operators who require more direct routing between North America and Europe.

Propulsion is provided by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW545D engines that offer higher thrust and improved fuel efficiency. The Citation Ascend delivers a maximum speed of 441 ktas, a range of 1,940 nautical miles and a full fuel payload of 900 pounds, giving operators solid performance for regional and continental missions. Ground operations are supported by an unattended Honeywell RE100 [XL] auxiliary power unit equipped with self-management functions and bleed leak detection. This allows crews to heat or cool the cabin efficiently with reduced fuel burn and lower noise levels.

With its upgraded systems, refined cabin and enhanced operational capability, the Cessna Citation Ascend positions itself as a compelling new option in the midsize jet segment. Its certification marks the latest step in the ongoing evolution of Textron Aviation’s popular 560XL family and reinforces the company’s commitment to continuous improvement in the business aviation sector.
