Eswatini and South Africa Strengthen Aviation Cooperation through Bilateral Air Services and Search and Rescue Agreements

In a significant step toward deepening regional aviation cooperation, the Kingdom of Eswatini and the Republic of South Africa have signed two landmark agreements — a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) and a Search and Rescue (SAR) Agreement — aimed at enhancing air connectivity, safety, and collaboration between the neighbouring states.

The agreements were signed by The Honourable Minister of Public Works and Transport, Chief Ndlaluhlaza Ndwandwe, and South Africa’s Minister of Transport, Her Excellency Ms Barbara Creecy, during a formal ceremony that reaffirmed the shared commitment of both nations to strengthen their partnership in civil aviation.

Enhancing Regional Air Connectivity

The Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) formalises and modernises the existing air transport relationship between Eswatini and South Africa. It establishes a clear framework for airlines of both countries to operate scheduled air services, thereby improving connectivity, boosting tourism, and supporting business and trade opportunities across the Southern African region.

By aligning with international civil aviation standards, the BASA provides a platform for both nations to expand their route networks and create an enabling environment for carriers to develop new market opportunities.

Strengthening Search and Rescue Collaboration

The Search and Rescue (SAR) Agreement complements this progress by ensuring coordinated and efficient joint responses to aviation emergencies. Under this arrangement, both countries commit to sharing expertise, resources, and operational support to improve the effectiveness of search and rescue missions within their respective flight information regions.

This cooperation reflects the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) global emphasis on regional coordination and mutual support in the provision of search and rescue services — a critical element of aviation safety.

Commitment to Safer Skies and Shared Growth

Speaking at the signing, officials from both ministries emphasised that these agreements mark an important milestone in strengthening bilateral relations and advancing mutual objectives for safer, more efficient air transport operations.

The partnership also underscores a shared vision for economic growth through aviation, with both governments recognising the sector’s vital role in connecting people, fostering trade, and supporting development.

As air transport continues to play a key role in Southern Africa’s integration and economic development, these agreements serve as a strong testament to Eswatini and South Africa’s ongoing collaboration — one built on trust, regional solidarity, and a commitment to safe and sustainable aviation.
