Brand-New Robinson R22 Arrives at Reagan Library for “Cowboys: History & Hollywood” Exhibition

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute (RRPFI) has taken delivery of a brand-new Robinson R22 helicopter courtesy of Robinson Helicopter Company (RHC) as a central feature for its upcoming exhibition “Cowboys: History & Hollywood.” The exhibition will open on October 18, 2025 and run through April 19, 2026 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.

From Horseback to Helicopters

The exhibition explores the evolution of the American cowboy from traditional horseback riders to the modern aerial ranchers of today. At the center of this story is the Robinson R22, a two-seat light utility helicopter renowned for its reliability, efficiency and accessibility. Since its introduction, the R22 has transformed ranching and agriculture by enabling aerial livestock management often in rugged and remote environments where horses once reigned supreme.

David Smith, president and CEO of Robinson Helicopter Company, highlighted the aircraft’s significance:

“The R22 has long been a reliable tool in the ranching and livestock world, enabling the hard work and ingenuity of the modern cowboy who flies a helicopter rather than riding a horse. Despite many who view Robinson helicopters as personal transportation, a large percentage of the nearly 15,000 aircraft we’ve produced right in Torrance, California are workhorses built for tough jobs.”

Robinson Helicopter, headquartered in Torrance, California, is the world’s leading manufacturer of civil helicopters. The company recently marked the 50th anniversary of the R22’s first flight, a milestone that changed the face of general aviation. Before the R22, helicopters were primarily the preserve of the military, public service agencies and corporate users. The R22’s lightweight design and affordability democratized helicopter flying, opening opportunities for utility and agricultural operators worldwide.

A Global Workhorse

The R22’s role in livestock management has been particularly transformative in markets such as Australia, South Texas and South Africa where helicopters are used extensively for animal mustering and agricultural operations. Its simplicity and low operating costs made it the ideal choice for ranchers needing a practical and effective aerial tool.

Hollywood Meets History

The 10,000-square-foot exhibition at the Reagan Library blends authentic cowboy history with Hollywood mythmaking. Visitors can expect rare photographs, authentic gear, Western memorabilia and props from classic Western films. The addition of the R22 adds a technological dimension to the narrative, illustrating how innovation continues to redefine the cowboy tradition.

David Trulio, president and CEO of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, emphasized the symbolism behind the display:

“Featuring a Robinson R22 helicopter within our ‘Cowboys: History & Hollywood’ exhibit illustrates how innovation advances the iconic tradition of cattle herding – reflecting the same resourcefulness and determination that President Reagan championed throughout his life.”

Aviation and the Cowboy Spirit

By showcasing the Robinson R22, the exhibition captures the enduring cowboy ethos — independence, resilience and adaptability — while underscoring the helicopter’s role in modern ranching and agriculture. It is a fitting tribute to both the history of aviation and the timeless legacy of the American cowboy.
